Castlery Review – Honest Prices, Expensive Second Thoughts

What It Is and Who It Is For

Castlery sells modern furniture online — sofas, dining, beds, storage, outdoor — with sofas from about $1,649 to $5,789. There is a New York showroom, free fabric swatches, and an augmented-reality tool for seeing pieces in your room.

It sits above flat-pack and below traditional furniture showrooms. It suits someone furnishing a room properly who wants contemporary design without a designer markup — and who is fairly confident about what they want before they order.

That last clause is the whole review. Castlery does something we rarely get to report — its list prices appear to be honest — and something we report far too often: changing your mind is very expensive.

Affiliate disclosure: we earn 3% if you buy through our links. All prices, fees and policy text below came from Castlery’s own pages on 8 August 2026.

What It Costs, and a Pleasant Surprise

Sofas ran roughly $1,649 to $5,789 on the day we checked, with one large modular piece at $10,819. Most of the range sits between $1,700 and $4,000.

The banner said “Mid Season Sale ending soon – Save up to 50%.” We have spent enough of these reviews finding that a “sale” is simply the permanent price that we went and checked.

We pulled the list price and the current price for fifteen sofas. Most showed 0% off. A handful showed 5%.

In other words, the list price is generally the real price. Castlery is not running the inflated-reference-price theatre that dominates this category, and that deserves saying plainly.

The honest flip side: “up to 50%” is doing enormous work for a catalogue where most items are not discounted at all. The deep cuts apply to clearance lines, not the sofa you actually want. Arrive expecting to pay the ticket price.

Which makes the next section matter more, not less. When the price is real, the fees are where the surprises live.

The Real Cost of Changing Your Mind

Castlery has a 30-day return policy. That sounds generous. Here is what it actually costs.

  • A 20% restocking fee per returned item, deducted from your refund
  • Shipping fees are not refunded
  • Room of Choice and White Glove service fees are not refunded
  • A $50 per item repackaging fee if you no longer have the original box
  • Items must be in “as-new condition” — no scratches, stains, damage or modification
  • No returns at all on clearance, final sale, display or “customized” items

Put real numbers on it.

Returning a $2,499 sofaAmount
Sofa$2,499.00
White Glove delivery$150.00
You paid$2,649.00
Less 20% restocking fee−$499.80
Less $50 repackaging (box discarded)−$50.00
White Glove fee, not refunded−$150.00
You get back$1,949.20
Cost of changing your mind$699.80 — about 26%

Roughly a quarter of your money to send back a sofa you did not like. Refunds begin within 7 business days of the item reaching their warehouse.

Is 20% unreasonable? It is at the high end but not unusual — we have seen 20% at other furniture retailers this year, and returned furniture is genuinely expensive to move and often impossible to resell as new. The point is not that it is outrageous. The point is that it is large, and most people do not price it in.

Keep the Boxes

This is the single most useful sentence in this review.

Do not let anyone take the packaging away for 30 days.

It saves you $50 per item in repackaging fees, and it materially improves your odds of the return being accepted in the first place, since “as-new condition” is much easier to demonstrate in the original box.

Note the trap in this. White Glove delivery — the tier most people need — includes “garbage removal.” The crew will helpfully take the packaging with them. If you might return the item, tell them to leave it.

Castlery does say this themselves, to their credit: We encourage customers to photograph the items scheduled for return and the condition of the packaging before handing them over to our delivery partners. Do that too — photographs of condition at handover are what settle disputes about who damaged what.

A related timing point. Damage or defects must be reported within 14 days of delivery and “noted on the proof of delivery document,” with quality issues reportable within 30 days. On Standard delivery your sofa arrives boxed and is left in the lobby, so you cannot realistically inspect it before the driver leaves. Photograph the boxes at handover and note on the delivery document that the goods are accepted subject to inspection.

There Is No Such Thing as an Exchange

This one catches people, and it is stated plainly in their terms:

rather than offering exchanges should you decide you would like to return a product, Castlery shall process all exchanges as normal returns per the guidelines outlined in the Return Policy. You may then choose to purchase a new item at your convenience.”

So swapping a sofa for the identical sofa in a different colour is a return plus a new purchase. You pay the 20% restocking fee, lose the delivery service charge, possibly pay $50 repackaging — and then pay full price again.

On our $2,499 example, wanting a different shade of grey costs about $700.

Which is exactly why the free swatches matter. Castlery will send you fabric samples for nothing. Ordering them costs a week of patience and saves the single most likely $700 mistake in this entire transaction. Do not skip that step to save a week.

Delivery: What “Free” Actually Buys

“Free shipping on orders over $1,399” is real but narrow. It applies to selected cities only, excludes add-on services, and the delivery tier it buys you is the most basic one.

ServiceCostWhere it goesUnpackAssemble
Standard$0 over $1,399Ground floor, lobby or “first dry area”NoNo
Room of Choice+$50–$70Your room, up to 2 flightsNoNo
White Glove+$100–$150Your room, up to 2 flightsYesYes, plus rubbish removal

The clause apartment dwellers must read: “Deliveries requiring a lift or staircase (Standard service) will be left at the entrance of the lift or foot of the stairs.”

If you live above the ground floor, free delivery means a boxed sofa in your lobby. That is not a service failure — it is the tier working as described — but it is not what most people picture when they read “free shipping.”

Two more things to budget for. Service fees are charged per shipment, not per order — so furnishing a room in one order may be billed White Glove more than once if it ships separately. And no tier includes moving your existing furniture; only White Glove takes the packaging away. Stairs beyond two flights “may incur extra charges.”

The Fees That Trigger Without You Buying Anything

Most of the charges above are things you choose. These are not.

“orders will be cancelled and subject to a 20% restocking fee if you cannot be reached to schedule your delivery date with the carrier.”

Read that again. Not cancelling. Not refusing. Being unreachable. On a $2,499 sofa, missing the carrier’s calls is a $500 event. Their terms add that on the delivery day “you will need to be available to be contacted either by call or text message.”

The rest of the list:

  • $100 re-delivery fee for last-minute changes past the stated cut-off
  • Refusing photo ID verification counts as refusing delivery — item returns to the warehouse and a service fee applies
  • Cancelling after your 24-hour window closes: 20% restocking fee, even though the goods never reached you
  • If the furniture will not fit into your home, you pay redelivery, or return shipping plus restocking if you cancel

On cancellation, the mechanics matter: changes are free any time before your shipment is processed, and you get a reminder with 24 hours to change or cancel without charge. Watch for that email. After it, second thoughts cost 20%.

Measure the Box, Not the Sofa

Their terms put this risk entirely on you, and they are explicit about it:

Please measure and ensure that your items will fit through doors, staircases and elevators in their packaging before you place your order. If we are unable to get your furniture into your home, you will be responsible for redelivery fees… or the return shipping and warehouse restocking fees if the order is cancelled.”

“In their packaging” is the operative phrase, and it is the mistake people make. A sofa that fits your doorway assembled may not fit boxed, because the carton adds several inches on every side.

Before ordering, measure your narrowest doorway, your tightest stair turn and your lift interior — and ask Castlery for the boxed carton dimensions, not the product dimensions. They are different numbers, and only one of them decides whether your sofa gets inside.

The Warranty Is Good and Unusually Specific

Credit where it is due — this is one of the better furniture warranties we have read, mostly because it refuses to give a single vague number.

ProductFrameComponentsCovers
Sofas, armchairs, ottomans, beds, daybeds10 years2 years1 year
Dining chairs, office chairs10 years2 years1 year
Tables, bookcases, shelving5 years2 years
Outdoor (excl. umbrellas)5 years2 years1 year
Bedding1 year

A 10-year frame warranty on a $2,500 sofa is a real commitment, and separating frame from components from covers is honest — it tells you what the company actually expects to last. A one-year cover warranty is candid about the fact that upholstery is the wear item.

Exclusions are broad but conventional:

  • Normal wear and tear, negligence, abuse, accidents
  • Burns, cuts, scratches, tears, scuffs, watermarks, indentations and pet damage
  • Damage from detergents, abrasives or harsh cleaners
  • Indoor products used outdoors; any customer modification
  • AS-IS and display items, and anything not bought directly from Castlery

The clause to note: “Castlery’s decision on all issues relating to complaints regarding defects, either of workmanship or materials, shall be final and conclusive.”

The company is the sole judge of whether your sofa has a defect or has simply worn. That is common in furniture, and the ten-year term is worth more than the clause takes away — but it is why photographs and written records matter.

The Castlery Club, and What It Is Not

Good news for once on the subscription front: it is not one. The Castlery Club is a free loyalty programme with no fee and no auto-renewal, and existing account holders are enrolled by default. There is nothing to cancel and nothing to be charged for.

The mechanics, with the catches:

  • 50 credits = $50 off (min. spend $1,000)  ·  100 = $100 (min. $1,500)  ·  200 = $200 (min. $2,000)  ·  300 = $300 (min. $2,800)
  • Credits expire after one year of inactivity
  • Vouchers expire 30 days from issue — so redeem only when you are ready to buy
  • Not usable on shipping, Room of Choice, White Glove or extended warranty
  • Cannot be combined with other promotions unless stated
  • Castlery may amend the terms at any time, at which point unredeemed credits are forfeited

Note the minimum spends. The best tier is $300 off $2,800 — about 10.7%. The entry tier is $50 off $1,000, just 5%. Do not let a voucher push you into a bigger order than you wanted; the discount rate is modest and the minimums are steep.

How to De-Risk a Castlery Order

  1. Order the free swatches. Colour is the most common regret and it costs $700 to fix
  2. Visit the New York showroom if you can reach it, or use the AR tool
  3. Ask for boxed carton dimensions and measure your narrowest doorway, stair turn and lift
  4. Buy White Glove if you are above the ground floor. Standard leaves it at the foot of the stairs
  5. Check whether your order ships in one or several shipments — service fees are per shipment
  6. Watch for the “ready to process” email. You get 24 hours to change your mind for free
  7. Answer the carrier. Being unreachable triggers a 20% restocking fee
  8. Photograph everything at delivery, and note on the delivery document that goods are accepted subject to inspection
  9. Keep the packaging for the full 30 days, and tell the White Glove crew not to remove it

Legitimacy and Safety Record

We searched the CPSC recall database on 8 August 2026 and found no recalls for Castlery. We validated the query against a control search for dresser recalls, which returned 70 recordsthree of them tip-over recalls issued within the previous two weeks. So the query works, this is an actively policed hazard category, and Castlery has a clean record in it.

Furniture tip-over is a serious and continuing safety issue, particularly with chests and dressers in homes with young children. Use the anti-tip hardware supplied with any storage furniture, whoever makes it.

Other legitimacy signals are solid: a physical New York showroom, published warranty, delivery and refund policies with stated last-updated dates, free swatches, an interior styling service, and a zero-tolerance policy on abuse toward staff that may result in refusal of service. This is a real retailer with real documentation, not a drop-shipping front.

How It Compares

CastleryFlat-packLocal furniture store
Sofa price$1,649–$5,789Much lessOften more
Sit on it firstOnly in New YorkIn storeYes
Cost to change your mind~26%Often free returnsVaries, often restocking too
Frame warranty10 years on sofasUsually shorterVaries widely
Assembly includedOnly on White GloveNo, you build itOften yes

The trade is design and warranty against the ability to sit on it first. A local store lets you test the sofa and usually delivers it up your stairs; Castlery gives you a better frame warranty and more contemporary design at a keener price, provided you get the decision right at the first attempt.

Who Should Buy and Who Should Not

Buy if you:

  • Know what you want and will order swatches to confirm the colour
  • Value a 10-year frame warranty and want it stated per component
  • Can reach the New York showroom, or are confident buying from swatches and AR
  • Want contemporary design without traditional showroom markups
  • Have easy ground-floor access, or will pay for White Glove

Look elsewhere if you:

  • Are unsure and want the option to send it back. That option costs about a quarter of your money
  • Are buying clearance or customised items — those cannot be returned at all
  • Cannot confirm the boxed dimensions will fit your doors, stairs or lift
  • Cannot reliably answer a carrier’s calls during the scheduling window
  • Need to sit on a sofa before spending $2,500 and are nowhere near New York
  • Have nowhere to store a large box for 30 days

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • List prices appear genuine — most sofas we sampled showed 0% off, not fake discounting
  • 10-year frame warranty on sofas, chairs and beds; 5 years on tables and outdoor
  • Warranty stated per component rather than as one vague figure
  • No CPSC recalls, verified against a live 70-record control
  • Free fabric swatches — the cheapest insurance available here
  • Physical New York showroom, plus an AR visualisation tool
  • Free standard shipping over $1,399 in selected cities
  • Castlery Club is genuinely free — no fee, no auto-renewal, nothing to cancel
  • Policies published with last-updated dates; 24-hour free cancellation window
  • They tell you to photograph items and packaging before handover

Cons

  • 20% restocking fee per returned item — about 26% all-in on a typical order
  • $50 per item repackaging fee if the original box is gone
  • Shipping and delivery service fees are never refunded
  • Exchanges are processed as returns, so a colour swap costs the full 20%
  • 20% restocking fee simply for being unreachable to schedule delivery
  • $100 re-delivery fee for late changes; service fee for refusing ID checks
  • Free Standard delivery leaves items at the lobby or foot of the stairs
  • Delivery service fees are per shipment, not per order
  • No returns on clearance, final sale, display or customised items
  • You bear the cost if the boxed item will not fit through your door
  • “Save up to 50%” banner over a catalogue mostly at 0% off
  • Castlery is the final judge of its own warranty claims

Limitations of This Review

Our general web search was unavailable, so this is built from Castlery’s own published pages read on 8 August 2026 — delivery, warranty, sales and refunds, club terms and category listings — plus the CPSC recall database and the Internet Archive.

We could not reach Trustpilot, the BBB or Reddit, so we have no independent customer data — nothing on build quality in the flesh, delivery reliability, how often those fees are actually enforced, or how warranty claims go in practice. Fee schedules describe the worst case a company reserves the right to impose, not necessarily what it routinely does, and we could not test the difference. Treat that as a real gap.

We have not seen or sat on any Castlery furniture. Nothing here assesses comfort, fabric quality, wood or frame construction, or how the pieces look in a room — we assessed pricing, fees, delivery terms, warranty and disclosure.

Our pricing finding is a sample, not a census: fifteen sofas from one category page on one day. It shows list pricing is generally real across that sample, not that nothing on the site is ever discounted. We checked archived homepages for a perpetual-discount pattern and could not establish one — sale banners appeared on some archived dates and not others, so we are not claiming the sale is permanent, only that promotions appear frequently. Delivery fees vary by zip code and free shipping applies only to “selected cities” which are not listed, so check your own address. Prices and policies change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Castlery furniture cost?

Checked 8 August 2026, sofas on the all-sofas page ranged from about $1,649 to $5,789, with one large modular piece at $10,819. Most of the range sits between roughly $1,700 and $4,000. This is mid-to-upper-market pricing - well above flat-pack, below traditional furniture showrooms.

Are the sale prices real?

More real than we expected, and this is worth crediting. Despite a banner reading "Mid Season Sale ending soon - Save up to 50%," we pulled the list price and current price for fifteen sofas and found most were showing 0% off, with a handful at 5%. In other words the list price is generally the actual price rather than inflated scenery - which is unusual in furniture. The flip side is that "up to 50%" is doing heavy lifting for a catalogue where most items are not discounted at all, so do not arrive expecting half off a sofa.

What does it cost to return a Castlery sofa?

More than most people expect. There is a 20% restocking fee per returned item, shipping and any Room of Choice or White Glove service fees are not refunded, and there is a $50 per item repackaging fee if you no longer have the original box. On a $2,499 sofa delivered with $150 White Glove service, returning it costs roughly $700 - about 26% of what you paid - assuming the packaging is gone.

Can I exchange an item instead of returning it?

Not in the way you would hope. Their policy states that "rather than offering exchanges... Castlery shall process all exchanges as normal returns," after which you buy the replacement separately. So swapping a sofa for the same sofa in a different colour costs you the full 20% restocking fee plus any repackaging and unrefunded delivery charges. Get the colour right the first time - order free swatches.

Is delivery really free?

Standard delivery is free on orders over $1,399, in selected cities only. But Standard means ground floor, lobby or "first dry area" - no unpacking, no assembly, no packaging removal. If your delivery involves a lift or stairs, Standard leaves the item at the entrance of the lift or the foot of the stairs. Room of Choice adds $50-$70 and White Glove adds $100-$150, and those are the tiers that include stairs, unpacking and assembly. Critically, the fees are charged per shipment, not per order, so a multi-item order can be charged more than once.

What is the warranty?

Layered, specific and better than most. For sofas, armchairs, ottomans, beds and daybeds: 10 years on frame structure, 2 years on components such as foam, stitching, zips, springs, suspensions, legs and mechanisms, and 1 year on covers. Tables, bookcases and shelving get 5 years on the frame and 2 years on components. Outdoor furniture gets 5 years on frame, bedding 1 year. Publishing separate terms per component is more honest than a single vague number.

What does the warranty not cover?

Normal wear and tear, negligence, abuse, accidents including burns, cuts, scratches, tears, scuffs, watermarks, indentations and pet damage, damage from harsh cleaning agents, indoor products used outdoors, any customer modification, AS-IS or display items, and anything not bought directly from Castlery. Note also that Castlery states its "decision on all issues relating to complaints regarding defects... shall be final and conclusive," so the company is the judge of its own warranty claims.

Can I be charged a fee without cancelling anything?

Yes, and this is the part worth reading twice. Orders "will be cancelled and subject to a 20% restocking fee if you cannot be reached to schedule your delivery date with the carrier." Last-minute delivery changes incur a $100 re-delivery fee. If you refuse photo ID verification that counts as refusing delivery and a service fee applies. And if the furniture will not fit through your door, you pay redelivery or return shipping plus restocking. Answer the carrier when they call.

Is the Castlery Club a paid subscription?

No - it is a free loyalty programme with no fee and no auto-renewal, and existing account holders are enrolled by default. Credits convert at 50 credits for $50 off with a $1,000 minimum spend, up to 300 credits for $300 off with a $2,800 minimum. Credits expire after one year of inactivity, vouchers are valid 30 days, and they cannot be used on shipping, delivery services or extended warranty.

Can I see the furniture before buying?

Partly, and you should. Castlery offers free fabric swatches and has a New York showroom, plus a web-based augmented reality tool for visualising pieces in your room. Given a 20% restocking fee, ordering swatches before you commit is the single highest-value thing you can do - it costs nothing and the alternative costs hundreds.

Verdict

3.5 / 5

Honest prices and a serious warranty, wrapped in the most expensive set of second thoughts we have priced this year.

We went looking for inflated list prices and did not find them. Across fifteen sofas, most were selling at full list — no phantom discount, no permanent “sale.” After the number of retailers we have caught doing the opposite, that is worth saying loudly.

The warranty backs it up. Ten years on a sofa frame, two on the components, one on the covers — stated separately, which tells you the company has actually thought about what fails and when. No recalls, a real showroom, free swatches, and a loyalty programme that is genuinely free.

Then you read the returns page.

A 20% restocking fee, unrefunded delivery service charges, and $50 an item if the box is gone. On a $2,499 sofa with White Glove delivery, sending it back costs about $700 — roughly 26% of what you paid. And because exchanges are processed as returns, that is also the price of ordering the wrong shade of grey.

The clause that most deserves attention is the one you cannot choose: a 20% restocking fee if the carrier cannot reach you to schedule delivery. Not cancelling — just missing calls. That is a $500 penalty for a busy week.

None of this makes Castlery a bad retailer. The pricing is straight, the warranty is real, and the terms are all published where you can read them — which is exactly why they are quotable here. It makes Castlery a retailer to buy from decisively.

Order the swatches. Measure the box, not the sofa. Pay for White Glove if you live up stairs. Answer the phone. And keep the packaging for thirty days — because at Castlery the cardboard is worth $50 a box, and the decision is worth $700.

Before You Order

Buy decisively, because second thoughts are expensive here: returns carry a 20 percent restocking fee per item, shipping and White Glove charges are never refunded, and there is a $50 per item repackaging fee if the box is gone - roughly $700 on a $2,499 sofa, about 26 percent of what you paid. Exchanges are processed as returns, so a colour swap costs the same, which makes the free fabric swatches the single best-value thing on the site. Order them first, and use the New York showroom or the AR tool if you can. Ask for boxed carton dimensions rather than product dimensions and measure your narrowest doorway, stair turn and lift, because if it will not fit you pay the redelivery or return costs. Free standard shipping over $1,399 applies in selected cities only and leaves items in the lobby or at the foot of the stairs, so budget $100-$150 for White Glove if you live above ground level - and note service fees are charged per shipment, not per order. Watch for the shipment notification, which gives you 24 hours to cancel free, and make sure the carrier can reach you: being unreachable to schedule delivery triggers the same 20 percent restocking fee. Photograph everything at delivery and keep the packaging the full 30 days. On the plus side, most sofas sell at genuine list price rather than a fake discount, sofa frames carry a 10-year warranty, and there are no CPSC recalls. All details checked 8 August 2026. We earn 3 percent if you buy.
